Supplemental Pilot Matching and 2AFC Experiment, Observer A5 Data

Pilot Matching Experiment

The files below provide individual observer data for each condition. The files are tab-delimited tables, each 108 rows x 3 columns. The first column is the trial-by-trial luminance of the tab in cd/m^2, in the order that they were presented in the experiment. The second column indexes the tab orientation: 1 = flat in-plane, upper light contex (-90 degrees); 2 = rotated out-plane, lower dark context (45 degrees); 3 = rotated out-plane, upper light context (-45 degrees); 4 = flat in-plane, lower dark context (90 degrees). Note that this is not the natural order that you might expect. The third column contains the observer's responses from the grayscale Munsell chart. The Munsell values range from 0.5 to 9.5. As noted in the manuscript, there are three out-of-range values: -1 = "Darker than 0.5"; -2 = "Lighter than 9.5, but still a surface"; -3 = "Glowing".

Note that for all observers, the tab luminances are different between the binocular and monocular conditions. For the binocular condition, the tab luminances range is [0.63 261.86] cd/m^2. For the monocular condition, the tab luminances range is [0.58 238.39] cd/m^2.

Munsell values for our experiment may be converted to reflectances via this table. First column is Munsell value, second is reflectance, third is log10 reflectance.

2AFC Experiment

The files below provide individual observer data for each condition. The files are tab-delimited tables, each 800 rows x 3 columns.

The first column indexes the stimulus condition in the order presented. The indices indicate the following conditions for all observers except Observer A1:

For Observer A1, the tab luninances were 1.34, 6.04, 27.29, 123.23 cd/m^2 rather than the slightly lower luminances used for the other observers.

The second column is the luminance of the match patch, in cd/m^2.  This value was adjusted by a 2-down 1-up staircase procedure.

The third column indexes whether the flat in-plane patch, regardless of whether it was the reference or the match, was on the left (1) or the right (2).

The fourth column is the observer's response, "left was lighter" (1) or "right was lighter" (2).
